During this virtual pre-professional event, NSLI-Y participants spoke with Damian Wampler, Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Damian spoke about his journey to working for the U.S. Dept. of State  as a Foreign Service Officer (FSO). During the event, Damian shared his educational and professional background, opportunities in the medical field within the Dept. of State, considerations when choosing a country to serve in as an FSO, insights into how to prepare for a career in diplomacy, and more!

Speaker Bio

 

Damion Wampler is a Foreign Service Officer currently stationed in Moscow, Russia. After majoring in Anthropology and English at Boston University, Damian joined the Peace Corps. He volunteered in Kyrgyzstan, where he first began learning Russian. From then on the Russian language became a recurring part of his career. In addition to returning to the Peace Corp as a recruiter. Damian worked for the FLEX program in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, and he received a Fulbright scholarship. During his career as an FSO, Wampler has served in several countries including Zimbabwe, Georgia, Tajikistan, Pakistan, and now Russia, where he has been able to combine his many lifelong passions such as photography and writing with his work as a diplomat.
